For quite a few years now, one of the best free alternatives to commercial image editing suites like Photoshop or Corel Draw is GIMP, short for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a multiplatform open source tool that allows practically the same operations as payment software.
You can use GIMP both to retouch images and to create new ones. The brushes that the application has are the brush, the pencil, the clone stamp and the airbrush, among others. GIMP's characteristics are practically the same as those of any current image editor: layer system, alpha channels, operations history, selection and transformation tools, masks, gradients, etc. You can also use GIMP to convert images between formats, batch process files, compose vector images, or edit animated graphic formats. In addition, the functionality of the program can be extended through the use of plugins. There are more than a hundred.
